LaHood's Bill Expanding Health Savings Account Eligibility

Darin LaHood has introduced legislation that would expand eligibility for Health Savings Accounts by allowing individuals to keep an HSA even if their spouse is enrolled in a Flexible Spending Arrangement.
The proposed Health Savings for Families Act would change current federal law, which bars otherwise eligible individuals from contributing to an HSA if their spouse participates in an FSA that can reimburse family medical expenses. If approved, the measure would allow spouses covered under separate health plans to contribute to their own HSAs while maintaining greater flexibility over healthcare spending.
LaHood said the legislation is intended to give families more choice and control over healthcare costs by removing what he called an unnecessary barrier under current law.
